CPR HCP or BLS Certificate
How to prepare a health care provider or basic life support certificate when your program or placement assigns this requirement.
Applicability: Your program or placement may assign professional-level resuscitation training.
CareCard catalogue default: 365 days.
Evidence reviewed: August 31, 2026
Follow the exact level named in your assigned requirement. A general CPR course is not automatically equivalent to CPR for health care providers or Basic Life Support (BLS).
What your assigned requirement may ask for
- A complete certificate showing your name
- The provider and exact course level, such as BLS
- The successful completion or issue date
- The expiry date and certificate number, when shown
Confirm that the course is accepted by your program before registering. Course names, delivery methods, and accepted providers can differ.
Current guidance
Basic Life Support courses are designed for health care professionals and others with a duty to respond as part of a team. Both the Canadian Red Cross and Heart & Stroke issue BLS certification for one year. Ontario's ambulance regulation also requires annual recertification at an approved CPR level for employed emergency medical attendants and paramedics.
These sources do not decide which provider or course your placement accepts. The assigned requirement does.
CareCard validity
CareCard's current catalogue default is 365 days, consistent with the one-year period used by major Canadian BLS providers. The expiry shown on your assigned requirement controls.
