Mask Fit Test

How to prepare a respirator fit-test record when your program or placement assigns this requirement.

Applicability: Your program or placement may assign fit testing for a tight-fitting respirator.

CareCard catalogue default: 730 days.

Evidence reviewed: August 31, 2026

A fit-test result applies to the exact respirator make, model, style, and size tested. It does not prove that every mask or respirator fits you.

What your assigned requirement may ask for

  • Your name and the fit-test date
  • The respirator manufacturer, model, style, and size
  • The qualitative or quantitative test method and result
  • The tester or provider and any stated retest date

Upload the complete record. A product box, purchase receipt, self-performed seal-check result, or photo of a respirator is not a fit-test record.

Current guidance

A tight-fitting respirator must form an effective seal with the wearer's face. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety advises fit testing before first use and repeating it every two years. A workplace respiratory protection program may require earlier testing after a change that could affect fit or when a different respirator is used.

A user seal check is performed each time a respirator is put on, but it does not replace a formal fit test.

CareCard validity

CareCard's current catalogue default is 730 days. Follow an earlier retest date or a respirator-specific rule shown on your assigned requirement or fit-test record.
